The Hound Group

The Basset Hound

Long of ear and patient of heart. Our Basset Hounds are bred for correct hound structure, melodious voice, and the gentle, steadfast temperament the breed has carried for centuries.

The Breed

A Hound of Quiet Dignity

The Basset Hound is a scent hound of French origin, bred to follow a trail with tireless patience and unhurried devotion. Low to the ground, long of ear, and melancholy of expression, the breed carries centuries of hunting purpose in a decidedly domestic frame.

In the home, the Basset is a creature of routine and affection: dignified with strangers, devoted to its family, and famously good with children. The breed asks for daily walks, a secure fence, and an owner who understands that a Basset's nose can override every other consideration. We also require that a family never lets their Basset Hound off lead in an unenclosed area.

It is not a breed for everyone. It is a breed for those who appreciate deliberation, a melodious voice, and a companion that never hurries and never forgets.

The Standard

What We Breed For

Structure and Substance

Correct Basset structure — bone, substance, and proportions that allow the breed to work a trail all day. We evaluate movement honestly, in the yard and in the ring, before any pairing is considered.

Temperament First

The gentle, steadfast temperament the breed is named for. A Basset that cannot be a devoted house companion is not a success here, whatever its ribbons.

Health Testing Before Breeding

Every breeding animal is health-tested and eye-examined before a pairing is considered. Basset-specific concerns are screened for and weighed against the pedigree as a whole.

Our Lines

Fifty Years of Hound Lines

Our Basset Hound foundation was built over decades, with breeding stock drawn from some of the most respected kennels in the breed's history. We have kept those lines deliberately — outcrossing rarely, and only when a pairing answered health, structure, and temperament at once.

The result is a recognizable family of hounds: the same deep, musical voice generation after generation, the same patient eye, and bone and substance that would satisfy a judge and a family in equal measure.

Absinthe-bred Bassets compete in the show ring and, more often, simply grow old on somebody's sofa — which is, in the end, the outcome we breed for.
