The Breed
Elegance with an Engine
The Whippet is a sighthound of English origin — the poor man's racehorse, bred to course and to sprint at astonishing speed, and to rest gracefully between exertions. Beneath the elegance is a surprisingly sturdy, athletic little hound.
In the home, the Whippet is gentle, quiet, and affectionate to a fault: a couch companion of the first order, fond of warmth and soft beds, yet transforming the instant it sees something worth running down.
They are sensitive souls — they learn quickly and take correction to heart. A Whippet thrives with kindness, a safe place to run, and a family that appreciates both the sprint and the siesta.
The Standard
What We Breed For
Movement and Soundness
Soundness and fluid, reaching movement — the essence of the sighthound. We evaluate gait and balance honestly, in the yard and in the ring, before any pairing is considered.
Temperament First
The sweet, biddable character the breed is loved for. A Whippet that cannot be a gentle house companion is not a success here, whatever its ribbons.
Health Testing Before Breeding
Every breeding animal is health-tested and eye-examined before a pairing is considered. Whippet-specific concerns are screened for and weighed against the pedigree as a whole.
Our Lines
Type Kept Deliberately
Our Whippet foundation was assembled with the same patience we bring to the Bassets: breeding stock chosen from established lines, outcrosses made rarely and only for cause, and each generation measured against the last.
The type we have kept is unmistakable — clean, flowing lines; a topline that moves as one piece; and the soft, tractable nature that has made the Whippet a favorite of fanciers for over a century.
Absinthe Whippets have done their work in the ring and on the course. Mostly, though, they do it curled under a blanket — a sighthound's idea of a day well spent.
